INTONATION PATTERNS

Intonation

Intonation is the way your voice changes in pitch and volume when you speak. English has a very wide pitch range and an archaic rhythm built of strong and weak forms. We use three patterns in our speech (pictured left). The pattern you use shows your attitude to the words you are saying. In this way, the word 'yes' could mean yes, no or maybe depending on your intonation pattern.
